What I Know to be True

Know that you are not alone. There are many who understand and are trained to help. The stigmas that surround the word mental illness are prevalent, but because it’s being addressed now as an illness, not a weakness, the stigma is decreasing. There are multiple resources to contact or start with someone who you trust. You don’t need to suffer in silence any longer; there is relief and hope nearby. Have the courage to reach out and speak out!

Speaking Out

The question you might be asking is why would I open up about my life struggles with mental illness and a suicide attempt? Over the past 5 years I have determined the two good reasons; if I had known, heard, or read about anyone who had experienced and knew first hand what my illness felt like, I without a doubt would have reached out to them and asked for a lifeline. I desperately needed to know I wasn’t alone in my hellish journey where I felt completely isolated and ashamed.

The Masks We Wear

I fully understand the risk and danger for people who are high functioning, who suffer from a mental illness, and who choose to hide it. I was a master of wearing the mask portraying a very happy, confident, and outgoing person when in public. The separation between how I felt and how I appeared to others was entirely the opposite. Other than my husband, no one knew anything was amiss in my life.
