How to Find a "Good" Therapist

ADVICE

It’s important to realize that not all therapists are equally helpful. Therapists often have areas of specialty - specific skills, expertise and experience with different types of mental illnesses and/or different populations (i.e. women/men, youth/adults, LGBTQ/straight, etc.) A large part of the therapeutic process is contained in the relationship between you and your therapist and that’s why it is vital to select a therapist that you genuinely connect with, like and trust.

Granted, you might be limited in your selection of available therapists due to insurance and/or funding but do what you can to ensure that your therapist is someone you can relate to and has expertise with the types of issues you need help with.

Resources

One of the best resources for finding a therapist who is a good fit for you can be found at Psychology Today website where you can search for Therapists, Psychiatrists, Treatment Centers, Teletherapy, and Support Groups in your area. You can learn about therapists in your area, their philosophy and approaches, specialty areas, what insurances they take and more! If you aren’t interested in therapy, check out the variety of support groups in your area using this link.
